Motoring the French Riviera.

cannes-panoramic

An increasing number of visitors take their cars to the French Riviera, or hire a car for a period.

Speaking generally, the roads are less pleasant to travel upon than are the roads in Great Britain. In France off the Routes Nationales the surface is often local limestone, and where this is not tarred it is ground up as line as flour.

A shower of rain converts the dust into mortar-like mud.

Small self-drive private cars can be hired in Lyons, Marseilles, Nice , Cannes and Monaco and other large towns on application to any of the most important railway stations in France, or to the principal travel agents and French Railway offices abroad.

A deposit must be paid in addition to the hire charge.

Petrol and oil are paid for by the hirer. Motor-coaches run in all directions. By making systematic use of them a visitor with little time at his disposal may, in a few days, gain a good general idea of the Riviera. The competition is sufficient to keep fares at a reasonable level.

Motor-bus services with time-tables are also very helpful.

The best way of all to see the Riviera and its hinterland is to go with a stout stick in hand and a knapsack on the back. not always on foot but taking advantage of friendly lifts, the buses, the tramways, and the main-line trains-to cross uninteresting bits or sections which in that way can be as well or better viewed.

Whether one travels eastward or westward along in French Riviera, the builder is seen at work. Considerable destruction was wrought during the bitter fighting following time landing of American and Free French forces in 1944.

Villas and many storied houses are being erected.
